Hawaii is a state located in the Pacific Ocean, and is the only U.S. state located outside of North America. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, and is composed of eight main islands, six of which are inhabited. The first settlers of Hawaii were Polynesians, who arrived in the islands around 300 AD. These settlers brought with them their own culture, language, and religion. They developed a complex society and established a monarchy, which lasted until the late 19th century. In 1778, British explorer James Cook arrived in Hawaii and named the islands the Sandwich Islands. He was followed by other European explorers, traders, and missionaries, who brought with them new technologies, diseases, and religious beliefs. In 1810, King Kamehameha I united the islands into a single kingdom. He established a strong monarchy and a centralized government, which lasted until 1893. In the mid-19th century, the Hawaiian monarchy began to face increasing pressure from the United States and other foreign powers. In 1893, a group of American businessmen overthrew the monarchy and established a provisional government. In 1898, the United States annexed Hawaii as a territory. In 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. Today, Hawaii is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, lush tropical forests, and vibrant culture. It is also home to a diverse population, with people of many different ethnic backgrounds.
